PARENTS will soon be able to take on the role of Big Mother as they watch their children at nursery while at work or home.

Cherubins Day Nursery, in Slagrove Place, Lewisham, will be the first in the borough to install 32 CCTV cameras around the site, which parents can access via their computer or mobile phone.

The cameras, which cost around £15,000 to install, will be located in classrooms, hallways and the external grounds of the nursery.

Cherubins director Andrew Brown says NurseryCams in the Croydon branch have been successful and parents have chosen to send their children there because of the cameras.

Mr Brown said: “It gives parents piece of mind knowing if there is an incident the footage can be played back.

“Staff are obviously on their toes if they know cameras are on them all day long.”

Each parent will be given a password to log on to the webcam but will only be able to access it on the days their child is present, and in the specific classroom their child is being taught.

The footage will be kept for 30 days before being wiped.

Manager for the Lewisham and Tulse Hill branches, Janett Woodcock, said: “Safety is a major issue so it gives parents reassurance.

“We use it for staff training because they can see how they position themselves in a room.

“We also use it when babies start walking. Parents feel guilty enough leaving their children so it’s nice to rewind the footage back and show them.”

The Lewisham nursery is set to open next month for 100 children aged three months to five years old.

An open day will be held at the site on July 10.

Staff and children at the Cherubins Day Nursery enjoyed bark rubbing, making dens, measuring plants and looking for insects in their completed forest garden last Wednesday.

The nursery provides care to children aged three months to five years old.

Nursery manager Janett Woodcote said: “The garden offers children opportunities to develop confidence and self-esteem through a hands-on learning experience. This is part of delivering the core curriculum.”
